<image:caption>Thanks to its iconic blackboard style sleeve designed by Basquiat the Beat Bop 12” has become one of the most collectable hip hop 12”s, equally for its cache as a symbol of pop art as much as its musical content. For many though the stripped back and spaced out musical backing and the dense verbal weave of Rammellzee mark the single out as massively ahead of its time, and is name checked by Cypress Hill and the Beastie Boys as an influence on their work</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Slinky Gym School</image:title>
<image:caption>The backstory to this piece of one off mutant electro is compelling as one would expect from anything involving Rammellzee. Recorded, mixed and edited during the months of September - November 1983, at Robert Crash's Flying Studio in Cologne. Ramm inexplicably, alongside all of his other commitments in 1983, managed to pop up in Germany and add vocals to this crazed, but slightly of its time, electro wonkiness. Slinky Gym School was a one off studio project that featured Robert Crash and Quick Culture & Die Partei members Tom Dokoupil, Walter Dahn and Detlev Kühne.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Rammellzee and Shockdell</image:title>
<image:caption>Around the tale end of the 80s the auteur producer Bill Laswell formed a group around Ramm called Ghettovetts. Laswell as-well as his faithful spar Nicky Skopelitis handled the musical content whilst Ramm and his graff buddy Delta aka Shockdell assumed the roles of the rhyming Ghettovetts. Their album was signed by Island subsidiary 4th and Broadway and of the 4 singles that came from the album this is one of my favourites primarily because Ramm lays down a “lecture” on the b-side that sees him unpack his mental suitcase for over 7 minutes over a grinding industrial funk groove with Bootsy Collins on bass.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - This Is What You Made Me</image:title>
<image:caption>The 90s appeared to be a baron period for Ramm in terms of musical output and aside from a fairly spartan contribution to an UNKLE track in 1998 very little was issued from the MIC of Ramm during the 90s. Other things may have kept him occupied in the 90s but when the new millennium rolled around Ramm seemed inspired to take on several new projects. The first to appear was this Japan-only release credited to “The Rammellzee”. Ramm had found a warm welcome to his art in Japan, in particular his ornate battle suits found favour amongst Japanese audiences. Unsurprising given that they are strongly reminiscent of the battle armour that Japanese Samurai warriors would have worn. The album is produced primarily by D.O.I and DJ Kensei and their abstract future leaning beatscapes play the perfect foil to the high intensity verbal stungun that Ramm prods into the listeners ear canal for 9 track album.</image:caption>

<image:caption>A year after the Japan only release came this follow up LP jammed with guest producers. The Bi-Conicals….. was a much more mixed bag than This Is What You Made Me. Where the latter was abstracted and blunted throughout this album saw Ramm play with styles. Stuart Argabright of the Death Comet Crew guest produces 3 of the tracks.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Cosmic Flush</image:title>
<image:caption>For those wanting a definitive statement of where Rammellzee’s voice is best encapsulated then this posthumously issued set of tracks is a fine legacy document. Jonah "Th' Mole" Mociun collaborated long distance with Ramm in the years before his death in 2010. Ramm’s death put a near decade long hold on the project seeing the light of day but it was finally released in 2019. Far from riding old school hip-hop beats this instead sees Ramm’s insular and paranoid rap schemas matched to similarly fractious and skittish sonic beds reducing speed metal, experimental electronics and abstracted beatscapes in to a nerve jangling web of distracted noise. To my mind this is perhaps the best bedfellow that Ramm’s lyrics have ever found. Similar to Richard Linklater’s reimagining of Philip K Dick’s novel of the same name Mociun’s choice of musical accompaniment perfectly compliments the unreal thrust of Ramm’s wordplay.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Sun Ra</image:title>
<image:caption>By his own acknowledgement took a modicum of inspiration from the Afro Futurist forefather Sun Ra. Indeed in one of the many subdivided explanations of his name that I have read or listened to Rammellzee explains that the Ramm component of his name is in honour to the famed warrior pharoah Ramesses II. Eyptology connections aside Ramm’s affinity for extravanagant stage outfits as well as his complex personal mythology creates strong grounds for establishing a connection between the two figures and many writers have readily absorbed Ramm into the lineage of Afro Futurist musicians starting with Ra and currently inhabiting the works of Shabazz Palaces and Actress. But Ramm was always keen to distance himself from Afro Futurism, emphasising that he self identified as a Gothic Futurist and was reticient to be designated as an afrofuturist. Such rampant individualism calls to mind another iconoclast musician…</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry</image:title>
<image:caption>Perry’s brilliance in the studio was matched by the eccentricity of his worldview. It’s often hard to put into words the exact substance of this worldview as it seemed to exist unto itself, a living organism that mutated in line with Perry’s mood and substance intake. Where Ramm had his battlestation Perry had his black Ark both serving as extensions of the minds of the creators that inhabited them. In Perry Rammellzee has probably his most likeminded creative counterpart. Perry created in accordance with his own self-created mythology, one closely aligned with a natural order based on the balance of earth, fire and water. In explaining his music Perry would submerge the listener in a dense and impenetrable stream of nonsensical ramblings. Ultimately what unites the two creatives is the creation of art under the influence of heavy amounts of alcohol and marijuana.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Cypress Hill</image:title>
<image:caption>The Californian hip-hop group are perhaps one of the most herbally synonymous musical groups in existence. Yet beyond their staunch love of the chronic the group have a lot to thank Rammellzee for. In their early years as a group frontman B-Real was struggling to find a voice that would help him cut through. After listening to Rammellzee B-Real produced an almost exact facsimilie of the nasal ‘Gangsta Duck' style that Ramm pioneered on Beat Bop and has since built an entire career out of it.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Beastie Boys</image:title>
<image:caption>The Beastie Boys were always impeccable when it came to paying dues to their sources of inspiration. Hotsaucecommitteeparttwo, their 2011 album, features a dedication to Rammellzee who had passed a year earlier. Their slightly adenoidal vocal delivery certainly owes a debt to Ramm although they should be applauded for biting in a less gauche way than B-Real.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Juice Aleem from the UK reggae hip-hop outfit New Flesh was one of the few new school MCs that Rammellzee gave credit to. The feelings were strongly reciprocated from Aleem and his group who gave two guest spots to Rammellzee on their 2002 album Understanding. In a quote taken from Roy Christopher’s excellent book “Dead Precedents: How Hip-Hop Defines the Future” Aleem heaps praise on Ramm… “Rammellzee is the equation, Father to a lot of styles in a lot of traditions and I’m just thankful to have known him and have worked with him. In even the few times that we met so much wisdom was imparted it was incredible. His lineage is also the real and true artist, the gangster artist who learns and touches by an innate skillset. He is the furthest thing from the fame/art school celeb and continued on regardless to his position in the history books. This is a lesson he taught all of us”</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Actress</image:title>
<image:caption>Darren Cunningham aka Actress has been at work in the experimental fringes of techno, electro and instrumental hip-hop for 15 years. A jewel in the crown of UK electronic music he has never aligned himself with a scene and has instead steadily created music that makes sense to himself and his own diet of influences at the time of creation. It’s unsurprising that on his 2017 album AZD Cunningham chose to doff his cap to Rammellzee. Sampling his voice on the track CYN, NYC backwards, the press release for the album very adroitly explains the methodology…. “Another way to approach would be through the art of James Hampton and Rammellzee (who inspired “CYN,” which Cunningham also sees as a vision of New York in reverse…) – both of whom, though of different generations of the African-American slave diaspora, created art through “Sourcing castaway materials from their environment and reinterpreting them into absolute majesty given from the fourth dimension.”</image:caption>

<image:caption>David “D.Ham” Hamilton is a Noods Resident, Dark Lord of the Vaults, and a general man about town in the Bristol music scene. He’s also an absolutely brilliant MC channeling the spirit of Rammellzee with his absurdist wordplay and darkly comic delivery. His skill has been put to good use recently with guest spots on Hamish ‘Kinlaw’ Trevis’s recent LP as well as proividing nearly a whole album of freakish verbalisations on the newly released Parable of the Empty Cup album on Bokeh Versions.</image:caption>

<image:title>Home - An Encoded Visionary: Companion Notes for An Hour for RAMM:ΣLL:ZΣΣ - Conclusion</image:title>
<image:caption>I read the story of Bryan Johnson recently. He’s silicon valley tech bro turned rejuvanetion athelete and BioHacker who is seeking to reverse the ageing process by funnelling $2M a year into a crazed regime of supplements, laser therapy, restricted diet and 8.30 bedtimes. His goal is to reverse and or at the very least arrest the process of ageing so that he can live to a ripe old age well over 100 and thus provide a “blueprint” for the rest of us to follow. In reading his story I was struck by how diamterically opposed his life is to that of Rammellzee.</image:caption>
